The Crusaders aren't bothered, but Australia's Super 14 broadcaster is opposed to the Waratahs' ploy to use players' initials rather than numbers on their jerseys this season.
Under the plan, each player's number would appear only on their shorts, with the jerseys showing only the player's initials, such as "LT" for wing Lote Tuqiri.
A spokesman for Sanzar confirmed the move was within the regulations of the game, but did not agree to the new jerseys.
Fox Sports has laid a complaint about the jerseys.
"We weren't consulted in any way shape or form, which itself is upsetting, and we've launched an official complaint to Sanzar via the ARU," said Fox Sports' executive producer of rugby, Matt McKeown.
"We can understand what they're trying to do, and we're not trying to say no to any innovation, but this one would just be a nightmare."
McKeown believed the concept would be confusing for fans and commentators and untenable for statisticians and officials.
Fox Sports wants the concept limited to tomorrow's final trial fixture against the Crusaders at Aussie Stadium, or an alternative plan such as players selecting their own numbers, as Australia's one-day cricketers do.
Sanzar's spokesman said it would hold an investigation into the Waratahs plan.
Crusaders coach Robbie Deans was not concerned about his team being confused.
"It doesn't have a great impact out on the field of play. You only see the numbers when the players are past you. It doesn't really give them any advantage," he said.
He also doubted the lettered shirts would last.
"I don't imagine that Sanzar would be that excited about it. There might be a loophole in year one but there won't be in year two. From the public's perspective I would have thought it's advantageous to have a uniform identification system."
Waratahs coach Ewen McKenzie said he would be disappointed if the innovation was reversed.
