Rugby: Waisake Naholo re-signs with Highlanders

All Blacks wing Waisake Naholo has re-signed with the Highlanders for next year.

Naholo, off contract at the end of this season, had been courted by Chiefs and Taranaki coach Colin Cooper who will take over from Dave Rennie in 2018.

Naholo had weighed up moving to Hamilton as his partner lives in Cambridge and his younger brothers are nearby in New Plymouth and Hastings.

But, given his strong form, has decided to stick with the Highlanders for one more season at least.

"I'm excited to announce I've signed another year to stay with the Landers," Naholo announced on social media.

"I love playing down here and playing in New Zealand. I'm excited for another big year next year."

Earlier this month, Naholo told the Herald he was torn between the Highlanders and the Chiefs.

"I'd like to stay in New Zealand for at least one more year and go from there," said Naholo.

"If I come up to the Chiefs I'll be closer to them and being close to family is important for my rugby career. It helps a lot with many things, but all this time I've been by myself so I don't mind."

Although enticed by the Chiefs, Naholo did note what turned out to be a deciding factor in his decision.

"I love playing for the 'Landers and the environment with the boys down there makes me enjoy my rugby."
