Tana Umaga is back training with the Hurricanes but he will not step straight back into the captaincy.
Umaga rejoined the Super 14 side on Monday, having completed an eight match unbeaten run with the Toulon club in France.
Assistant coach Murray Roulston says Umaga is looking sharp and training well as they prepare for tonight's pre-season hit out against the Chiefs in Wanganui.
Roulston says the captaincy for the season is still to be finalised, although Paul Tito will lead the side tonight.
All squad members are expected to get a run in Wanganui with the game to kick off at 6pm.
It will be played in four 20 minute quarters.
