KEY POINTS:
Sitiveni Sivivatu has resisted joining the All Blacks post-World Cup exodus with the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) today happily announcing the Waikato wing has re-signed until the end of 2009.
The relief was palpable as NZRU deputy chief executive Steve Tew confirmed the 25-year-old had fended off approaches from European clubs who were anxious to secure the winger's services after the All Blacks' Cup campaign ends in France in October.
With Aaron Mauger and Byron Kelleher already confirmed absentees from the All Blacks backline next season -- and doubts remaining over Luke McAlister and Rico Gear's future plans -- Sivivatu's decision to stay is a significant boost for the NZRU in wake of the post-Cup defections of forwards Anton Oliver, Carl Hayman and Chris Jack.
"Sitiveni is a great talent and his decision demonstrates his commitment to New Zealand rugby," Tew said.
"It also highlights the value of the black jersey. This is a good outcome not only for the All Blacks but also for Waikato and the Chiefs where he has made a significant impact."
Sivivatu had been considering potential moves offshore during a tumultuous period of his personal life -- which culminated in him pleading guilty to assaulting his wife during a domestic incident .
He was discharged without conviction but received a formal warning from the NZRU and was instructed to attending on-going counselling after the organisation found him guilty of serious misconduct following a review of the incident that landed him in court last month.
Chastened by the experience, Sivivatu reiterated today his immediate future lay in New Zealand.
"I'm really proud to wear the All Blacks jersey and to be part of the New Zealand rugby family. I'm looking forward to my rugby at all levels in 2008 and beyond.
"There were some big offers from overseas but there was also a very respectful negotiation with the NZRU."
Waikato Rugby Union chief executive Gary Dawson was also delighted the prolific try scorer would not be lost to the province.
"To have a player of his calibre and experience remain in New Zealand, and in particular the Waikato province and Chiefs region, is a positive for our teams and supporters," he said.
Sivivatu has scored 14 tries in a dozen test appearances since debuting against his native Fiji in 2005.
He is one of three wings named in the All Blacks squad to play tests against France and Canada -- starting with the opening French international at Eden Park next Saturday -- alongside Doug Howlett and Joe Rokocoko.
