Rugby: Ranger returns, Hobbs starts for Blues

Winger Rene Ranger returns from injury while utility Michael Hobbs starts at second five-eighth for the Blues in their Super 14 rugby match against the Cheetahs in Auckland on Friday night.

Ranger's recovery from eye socket damage is timely, as Paul Williams is out with the thigh muscle strain he suffered in warming up before the 35-31 loss to the Sharks last weekend.

Hobbs, who has come the bench for the past two matches, firstly at first five-eighth and then at second five-eighth, has been handed the No 12 jersey for the fixture at North Harbour Stadium, with Jamie Helleur going to the bench.

Coach Pat Lam, in naming his side today, has rearranged his back row, taking into account flanker Josh Blackie's expected six-week unavailability because of an ankle ligament injury picked up against the Sharks.

Jerome Kaino swaps places with Chris Lowrey and reverts from blindside to No 8, while Justin Collins, giving a breather on the bench last Saturday, returns to the starting 15 on the openside.
