KEY POINTS:
Players to watch from each of the five New Zealand Super 14 franchises:
Jerome Kaino (flanker, Blues): The rugby world at his feet when he became an All Black in 2004, injuries and ill-discipline have cost him since. Dropped by All Blacks midway through last year but bounced back strongly for Auckland. A powerful presence.
Richard Kahui (centre, Chiefs): Regarded as potential All Blacks bolter after brilliant Air NZ Cup with champions Waikato. Graham Henry asked him to prove his worth at Super 14 level. Attacking talents well suited to hard grounds.
Cory Jane (winger, Hurricanes): Starred last year for NZ Sevens and NZ Maori before a series of flashy showings for Wellington. More of the same may have him next cab off the rank if All Blacks wingers go down.
Corey Flynn (hooker, Crusaders): Captained New Zealand A and Canterbury last year and key figure in another Crusaders triumph, yet remains shut out of All Blacks hooker berth. Three rivals all "rested" for six rounds, opening the door to impress.
Clarke Dermody (prop, Highlanders): Key man to maintain the Highlanders' scrummaging standards while front row buddies Carl Hayman and Anton Oliver are on All Blacks fitness duty. Also a decent World Cup shot with Greg Somerville injured for another six months.
