Wellington and Hurricanes halfback Alby Mathewson has confirmed he will switch to the Blues Super 14 rugby franchise next year.
While a contract is yet to be signed, Mathewson indicated he will shift north because of a lack of opportunity in the capital. He regularly plays second-fiddle to All Blacks No 9 Piri Weepu.
"I need regular game time in the Super 14 if I want to make higher teams," he told The Dominion Post.
"The All Blacks is a dream and a goal for me and I think this is going to be the best opportunity for me to do that."
Mathewson, 23, has played one match for the All Blacks, against Irish province Munster during last year's season-ending tour.
Meanwhile, Canterbury and Crusaders and first five-eighth Stephen Brett continues to be linked with the Blues although he has yet to announce his intentions.
The Blues have sought to fill playmaking positions on their roster in recent weeks, but their advances have been spurned by several notable first five-eighths - All Black Daniel Carter, English international Jonny Wilkinson, Argentine No 10 Juan Martine Hernandez, Manawatu's Aaron Cruden and Bay of Plenty's Mike Delany.
