John Kirwan is advocating the return of transfer fees so Auckland and the Blues do not continue to be castigated for losing players they may have helped develop.
In response to a question yesterday in relation to schoolboy sensation Daniel Tupou, of Sacred Heart College first XV, the Blues coach said he got frustrated when he heard rugby people complain the franchise and/or union did not do enough to retain talent in the region.
"Everyone says, 'What are you doing?' We're actually doing everything we can not to get our players stolen down the road or across the Ditch.
"I want a transfer fee. If a kid's grown up here from 5 to 18 years old then I think we should get some money to put back into the schools and back into the system. Daniel is a little bit different because, like a lot of young Island boys, he's come in on scholarship and gets an education," Kirwan said.
He has been to the last two Sacred Heart games to keep an eye on Tupou, among others, and his son attends the school, while Blues high performance manager Tony Hanks was at the Auckland Grammar-St Peter's 1A tussle last Saturday. Tupou, incredibly, scored another hat-trick from tighthead prop in Sacred Heart's 22-3 win over MAGS.
