A broken jaw is a setback, but if he can get back on the field, play well and steer the team to a few wins then a World Cup spot awaits.

The Highlanders are lacking across the park, but an organised player like Slade can cover many deficiencies.

There are other important figures: Nasi Manu is the only viable option at No 8 - his strength will be crucial and he must stay on the field - and newcomer Shaun Treeby has undoubted class.

When Slade returns, he will have to state his case immediately to catch the All Blacks selectors' eyes.
