Robbie Fruean's career with the Chiefs has lasted just one season.
The explosive midfielder joined the two-time champions from the Crusaders for this year's Super Rugby campaign, only months after undergoing heart surgery.
But coach Dave Rennie says they've parted ways with Fruean.
"He's a great man but obviously we've got Sonny Bill coming back and we've picked up Seta (Tamanivalu), we've got quite a bit of size in midfield now and so our focus has been on specialist wingers and fullbacks etc. So a mix thing I guess."
Rennie's also confirmed they won't be welcoming back wing Lelia Masaga, who had been linked with a return from Japan.
