Liam Messam and Craig Clarke have been named co-captains for the Chiefs.
Coach Dave Rennie said the reason for the unusual move was based on the longer 24-week 2012 season. The pair will replace Mils Muliaina, who has left to play in Japan.
"It is a long season and this decision will allow the co-captains with their complementary skillsets, to share the extensive load,'' Rennie said.
"Liam and Craig are both players who will bring great values, work ethic and leadership to their roles as co-captain.''
Loose forward Messam, 27, has played 79 games for the Chiefs and is the captain of the New Zealand Maori and 2011 ITM Cup finalists Waikato.
