Blues player Rene Ranger, charged with assault, is expected to play in the Super 14 clash against the Hurricanes in Wellington tonight after being granted an exemption from appearing at a court hearing.
In a statement, Blues management said Ranger's solicitor had applied to the deputy registrar to have the matter remanded until May 29.
The case will be heard in Warkworth District Court today, but Ranger is not required to appear in person.
The 22-year-old Northland and Blues winger has been charged with assault in relation to an early-morning street fight in Matakana on Sunday, April 19, that left a man unconscious.
Ranger has been granted an appearance exemption and remanded until May 29, and will reportedly be considered for diversion.
Warkworth police Sergeant Bede Haughey could not comment on the specific matter, but said it was "not unusual" for people to be excused from making a first appearance in person.
Todd Simmonds, criminal lawyer and convener of the Auckland District Law Society criminal law committee, echoed Mr Haughey's sentiments.
"Without commenting on any specific case, it is not unusual for the scheduled first appearance of a matter to be adjourned without the need for an appearance from a defendant or counsel," he told the Herald yesterday.
Mr Simmonds said whether a person was excused from appearing first-up typically hinged on the reasons for adjournment or the perceived seriousness of the alleged offence.
"In general terms, the more serious the alleged offending, the less likely a first appearance would be adjourned without the need for an appearance."
Meanwhile, Ranger will face a New Zealand Rugby Union misconduct hearing next Tuesday to determine whether any disciplinary action will be taken against him.
