Rugby: Blues trio sign contract extensions

They might not know who will be coach from next season but it hasn't stopped Charlie Faumuina, Luke Braid and Tom McCartney all signing two-year contract extensions to remain at the Blues.

The Blues are rooted to the bottom of the Super Rugby table with only one win in 10 games, a record that will almost certainly see Pat Lam replaced as coach.

The coaching situation, together with the appointment of Gary Whetton as new Blues chairman, has created considerable uncertainty for playing and backroom staff.

Alby Mathewson, Isaia Toeava, Daniel Braid, Ma'a Nonu, Piri Weepu, Benson Stanley, Brad Mika, Chris Lowrey and Sherwin Stowers are all off contract with a number, including Toeava likely to head offshore.

Jerome Kaino (Japan) and Lachie Munro (France) have already signed to leave at the end of the season.

But Faumuina, who is in the frame for an All Blacks callup, said he is fully committed to the Blues and determined to play his role in the team's revival for 2013 and 2014.

"I enjoy being part of the Blues," the tighthead prop said. "I am proud to wear the jersey and am determined more than ever to do what I can to help get this team get back to where it should be."

It's a sentiment echoed by Braid, who is captaining the side in the absence of the injured Keven Mealamu.

"There is no doubt we're doing it tough this year, but the Blues environment is a good one and I want to keep on being a part of it," Braid said. "Playing alongside my brother [Daniel] means a lot to me and I very much want to be a part of this franchise for the future."

Lam lauded the signings, saying they were important members of the squad both on and off the pitch.

"These players are important to our group," Lam said. "They work hard, train hard and have high standards on and off the pitch. They have handled the added responsibility placed on each of them this season due to injured senior players, with grit and maturity."
