Excitement turned to Super 15 exasperation yesterday for the Blues as they fell under the hypnotic spell of the Bulls.
All the progress of the first two games was halted as the Blues struck a rugby roadblock they struggled to negotiate in the Sunday afternoon sunlight at Eden Park.
They were drawn into the mano-a-mano conflict the Bulls thrive on and when they tried to shift gear or use their ideas they made too many basic errors.
The Bulls' 28-21 victory was a historic first for them at Eden Park and a real boost for their four-game trip after landing in Auckland just a few days before this clash.
"I don't think we performed," Blues coach John Kirwan said bluntly.
