Hurricanes centre Conrad Smith will return home after damage to his nose in the Super Rugby loss to the Brumbies in Canberra.
Smith left the field with the game in the balance, down 17-16, which was the eventual final score.
Coach Mark Hammett says the extent of the injury is not fully known yet. He says it looks like the nose has been crushed and Smith may need surgery.
First five Aaron Cruden will also miss the plane to South Africa after picking up an Achilles injury. The Canes take on the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein next Sunday.
