Hurricanes fullback Cory Jane is shocked at the axing of veteran teammates Ma'a Nonu and Andrew Hore.
Coach Mark Hammett has confirmed both Nonu and Hore are unwanted by the franchise next season.
It's believed petulance on Nonu's behalf and midweek drinking from Hore are some of the reasons for their axings.
Jane says it's a decision which has taken him by surprise.
"It's a huge call. I was shocked when I first heard it. They have played a lot of games here and if you look at someone like Ma'a, he's still playing well and still doing the business," he said.
"I haven't talked to the coaches. I don't know what their plans are going forward."
He says Nonu isn't a divisive figure within the Hurricanes.
"You've just got to understand him. Sometimes he'll be grumpy if things aren't going well but you just have to give it back. Sometimes I'm grumpy and sometimes other people are grumpy and say things.
"He gives away penalties and things like that because he's a passionate person. We can all see he's passionate."
Jane says he now will have to sit down and assess if he wants to re-sign with the franchise beyond this season.
