The prognosis on All Black Sione Lauaki's chest injury deteriorated today with concerns he could require surgery for a torn pectoral muscle.
The bruising Chiefs No 8 suffered the injury during a Super 14 rugby match on April 8 and team management confirmed today the likelihood of surgery was increasing.
Lauaki, who was in dynamic form before the injury, visited a surgeon today.
A decision on whether he'll be operated on will be made later this week. If so his international season looks in jeopardy with a three-month lay-off likely.
Lauaki's injury was compounded with confirmation All Blacks fullback Mils Muliaina was in doubt for Friday's match against the Cheetahs with a suspected torn groin.
Captain Jono Gibbes was expected to be fit after suffering a back/rib strain.
