While the Chiefs would like to perpetuate the "sleeper" hold they have over their Super 14 rivals they are more intent on reducing their injured list.
That catalogue has expanded alarmingly this week with utility Loki Crichton the latest to leave training with some ailment.
Crichton had a year out of rugby after a serious neck injury but has become more involved each week and impressed during his half a game as fullback against the Reds.
His return looked opportune because the Chiefs' backline choices for Friday's home game against the Crusaders have been shredded by injury and the Commonwealth Games absence of sevens speedster Soseni Anesi.
But Crichton joined the list of uncertain starters after complaining of a thigh problem.
With Byron Kelleher, Sam Tuitupou, David Hill, Niva Ta'auso and Mils Muliaina also troubled by various ailments, coach Ian Foster's decisions will rely heavily on the advice of his medical staff.
"Sam and Byron are extremely doubtful and while we were interested in both Niva and David, it looks like they will only get close to selection," said Foster.
"Mils however should make it."
Foster was more intent on milking the new weapon the Chiefs have uncovered after the Reds complained that Hamilton was so boring it affected their match preparation.
Captain Chris Latham said his squad slept or watched television to kill time before the game and then produced their worst work of the series.
"We're bored out of our trees," Foster said as he continued the gag.
The Chiefs need the Crusaders to be afflicted by the same pre-match apathy if they are to upset the unbeaten visitors.
But life in the city will not be dull if Crusaders coach Robbie Deans runs into local referee Paul Honiss and addresses him about his control of last week's win against the Blues.
The Crusaders are dealing with a few injuries. Captain Richie McCaw, Aaron Mauger and Campbell Johnston are all recovering from minor leg ailments and both teams are due to be announced today.
