Don't you hate getting back from your hols and finding the work has piled up? That's what it will be like for Dan Carter, who - it has been reported - is on the verge of signing for the Blues. Carter will not only have a wonky test team to fix up next year, but also a useless Super 14 outfit.
Let's hope he can reclaim full fitness and is the Carter of old. The prospect of Carter joining the Blues is brilliant news, and the challenge should invigorate his career. Cantabrians may despair, but this move would also be a boon for New Zealand rugby. Auckland is the major market, and it is inconceivable that the rugby bosses could continue to let this area stagger on.
Carter will have a major mission on his hands, after years of poor Blues administration and haphazard coaching. But he's the man for the job. And if Auckland can pull this one off, they are finally due a wee - although largely undeserved - pat on the back.
This was a golden opportunity too good to pass up - Auckland needed to break the bank for Carter and it looks as though they have done it. Carter will be a publicity magnet, and his brilliant football should help unlock Auckland's great rugby potential.
So if it happens, a giant thanks to Canterbury and Robbie Deans for educating and polishing this wonderful rugby talent. The Blues should learn more off Carter than the other way around. I just hope they don't ruin him.
