Hurricanes Super 14 rugby wing David Smith has been remanded to reappear in court on drink and careless driving charges.
Smith appeared in Wellington District Court yesterday but did not enter a plea.
Court documents said Smith recorded 821 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath when arrested by police on the morning of Sunday, May 24 more than two times the legal limit, The Dominion Post reported.
The Hurricanes' Super 14 season ended when they lost a semifinal 10-14 to the Chiefs in Hamilton on the night of May 22.
Smith also faced one charge of operating a vehicle carelessly. He declined to talk to media. Hurricanes team management would not comment while the matter was under police investigation.
