The Highlanders are resigned to missing the services of outstanding centre Anthony Tuitavake in the Super 14 rugby competition next year.
Tuitavake re-signed with North Harbour yesterday, and all indications are he will be protected by the Blues when the franchises meet later this month.
He was chased by Otago and was wanted by the Highlanders.
Tuitavake was a revelation when he was drafted south in the Super 12 this year forming an instinctive combination with Seilala Mapusua.
His good form has continued into the NPC to the extent he is an outside chance to be selected for the All Blacks' Grand Slam tour.
Highlanders coach Greg Cooper said he would not hold his breath for Tuitavake to be available through the Super 14 draft.
"It looks extremely unlikely that we'll get Anthony back," Cooper said yesterday.
"We'd love to have him but you have to assume the Blues will look to keep him.
Otago Rugby Football Union and Highlanders chief executive Russell Gray said Tuitavake had been in Otago's sights.
"But we have to respect his decision to stay put and wish him well for the Super 14, presumably with the Blues," Gray said.
Between Otago and Southland, there is plenty of midfield talent in Tuitavake's absence.
Mapusua and Neil Brew have had fine seasons for Otago, and Jason Shoemark remains an under-utilised centre, while loan players Ben Smith and Jason Kawau have impressed for Southland.
The Highlanders may also have the opportunity of drafting in another midfielder when they finalise their squad on October 27.
