SYDNEY - Australia and New South Wales lock Justin Harrison has withdrawn from this weekend's round of Super 12 rugby matches after admitting he racially abused Cats winger Chumani Booi in a match in South Africa last weekend.
Harrison issued a statement today saying he had stepped down until a disciplinary hearing was convened.
"I've asked to be stood down until a hearing takes place. In the best interest of the team and the supporters I believe I should not play this weekend," Harrison said.
"I'm still coming to terms with the ramifications of what I said and for the moment it's better that I do that away from the team. "
Harrison issued an apology on Wednesday and had hoped to speak to Booi personally after the Cats lodged an official complaint over the incident, believing the slur was made by Harrison's Waratahs team mate Nathan Grey.
Super 12's governing body, Sanzar were due to meet in South Africa on Thursday to discuss the case and decide what action to take.
Harrison faces the possibility of a fine, suspension or having his contract terminated.
Waratahs coach Ewen McKenzie said he supported Harrison's decision.
"Justin has done what he believes is in the best interest of the Waratahs," McKenzie said.
"We considered taking the same action but are bound to follow Sanzar's disciplinary process which is now in the hands of South African officials. "
Harrison, 29, has played 34 tests for Australia since making his debut against the British and Irish Lions in 2001.
He announced last week he was leaving Australia at the end of the season to take up a contract with Ulster.
