Former rugby league star Craig Field is facing a murder charge after a man died from injuries suffered in an alleged assault outside a pub on the NSW north coast.
The 50-year-old victim was placed on life support after the incident on Sunday night, but died on Monday afternoon, police say.
He was found lying unconscious outside the pub on Marine Parade, Kingscliff, around 9.15pm (AEST), and later taken to Tweed Heads hospital.
Field, 39, a former South Sydney rugby league captain, and a 41-year-old man were arrested at the scene and later charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm.
The charges against both men will now be upgraded to murder, police say.
