Chiefs fullback-winger Loki Crichton suffered a serious neck injury in Friday's Super 12 match against the Queensland Reds in Hamilton.
Chiefs team doctor Zig Khouri said Crichton, who played on the wing, was undergoing further tests and scans at Waikato Hospital.
The injury appeared to be a dislocation and initial reports indicated Crichton had no spinal cord damage, he said.
Dr Khouri said it was likely Crichton would be operated on later this week to stabilise the injury.
Crichton is out of rugby for the rest of the Super 12 season at least, he said.
Crichton was stretchered off and replaced just before halftime when the Reds led 14-6.
The Reds went on to win 20-6.
