Hurricanes and All Black centre Conrad Smith is likely to miss all the rest of the Super 14.
Smith fractured the tibia and the fibula in his right leg just minutes into last night's match against the Western Force in New Plymouth.
He is currently undergoing surgery in Taranaki and should be out of hospital in a couple of days.
Hurricanes assistant coach Aussie McLean said it is extremely disappointing for Smith, who will not be seen on the rugby field for most of the rest of this year.
McLean said if Smith's rehab goes to plan he should be back playing in NPC.
He said the team is gutted for Smith, who has trained hard and showed great early season form.
