Outrageous. The Blues' confirmation that George Moala, who was found guilty of a serious assault, will return to work while the judicial process is completed is a slap in the face to victims of violence everywhere.
The Blues said the decision was made after "detailed consultation with New Zealand Rugby, the New Zealand Rugby Players' Association, key stakeholders and Moala's legal team". How about a detailed consultation with someone outside of the rugby hut?
A conviction is yet to be entered, and the sentencing process has a long way to go - the outcome will be revealed on May 1. Moala's lawyers are expected to apply for a discharge without conviction.
Maybe the Blues are playing it safe by following a protocol, but they need to realise that, at least to some people, they appear to be hiding behind jargon and a legal process. I believe the image they are presenting is awful, one where their priorities are put ahead of common decency. This also diminishes the seriousness of Moala's actions in what was described as a vicious bar fight two years ago.
There was damning evidence against Moala, that he continued to attack a retreating Clifford Matoka who was concussed, suffered major blood loss and required surgery. Since Moala has been found guilty by a jury of assault with intent to injure, he should be stood down until the situation is fully resolved.
