A rare early trip to South Africa has led to the Chiefs rejigging their standard training programme.
In the 10 years of the Super 12, the only time the Chiefs got to the republic in the first half of the competition was in the opening 1996 season.
But this time, their first two games are against the Sharks at Durban on Sunday morning, then in Johannesburg against the Cats.
Coach Ian Foster is a fan of the Chiefs getting some time overseas early in the campaign.
That's not because it is any easier on the park, but because the Chiefs are traditionally drawn from a wider mix of provincial setups than, say, the Crusaders or Highlanders. Getting away early helps to sharpen the players' focus.
"It's only been four days so far but I've got to say there's a good feeling in the team," Foster said yesterday.
But going to South Africa unusually early has meant one significant change.
"Traditionally we've eased off when we come to South Africa but because it's the first week we've kept a pretty high load," he said.
Foster has had the players training in rain jackets to try to simulate the anticipated heat for the next two games, along with their third round clash against the Force in Perth.
It was 28C in Port Elizabeth yesterday, where the Chiefs are preparing an hour's flight away from the Sharks' main base in Durban.
Foster is happy with progress, the only player not in contention to play the Sharks being captain Jono Gibbes, who is being prepared for a return in round two after his injury layoff to repair his foot.
Lock Sean Hohneck missed training last week with a knee problem, which Foster said will require careful attention for several weeks but shouldn't stop him playing; and flanker Liam Messam tweaked an ankle at training yesterday but should be available.
Hooker Tom Willis will lead the Chiefs in Gibbes' absence.
"The signs are good for Jono. He did scrum and lineout work yesterday and came through pretty well but we're targeting Friday week," said Foster.
The Chiefs, $1.65 favourites at the TAB, will be named tomorrow.
