His return to the Blues brought that edge, and elevation to captain is a test of his voice, his tactics and his impact on some of the flightier members of the group. The pack should be good with a heavy focus on Charlie Faumuina, Patrick Tuipulotu and Steven Luatua to rise to the extended challenge of this season. Jimmy Cowan's recruitment will bring a tougher edge to the heart of the operations and his direction will set foundation blocks.
Beyond that? The Blues have been searching for consistent backline cohesion, for players whose skills are balanced by quality decisions and that is the repeat task for this year's crew.
Where might they be vulnerable?
Those who have watched the Blues in the last decade will answer, they will find a way. That perspective may have seeped into the franchise's bones as well and it is something Graham Henry and Mick Byrne were unable to help counteract in their latest coaching bursts with the Blues.
Rookie David Hill and Glenn Moore have come into those roles alongside Kirwan and Grant Doorey in what will be a watershed campaign for all.
There have been disruptions with Peter Saili leaving mysteriously, George Moala playing pending a court sentencing and Frank Halai scolded for his efforts.
The pack has experience and substance, the backs have promising ticks beside most of them. Most have got great footwork but they have to play to patterns, their defence has to be as good as their attack, their brains have to be engaged if they are to deliver the communal crunch which separates the good from the rest.
Which player will give them the X-factor?
Midfield back Francis Saili is a symbol of the Blues' erratic work. He has attacking gifts which are envy of many midfielders and he can bend defences from set piece and punish in broken play. He made the All Blacks in 2013 but regressed as injury and over-confidence bit into his work and confidence.
This is his fourth campaign and with no Ma'a Nonu in his franchise face, he has the stage to show his game management has got back into sync with the rest of his play. A danger man to himself or the opposition?
Where will they finish and why?
Only devotees who found a stray $10 would plonk the cash on the Blues to be much better this season. Why? You can't help being tainted by their ongoing lack of success, 11 seasons with just two playoff appearances and no title. Backing the Blues is an emotional investment rather than a pragmatic approach. One year they will surprise, but 8th looks about their lot this season.
