Old school types cannot understand that the modern rugby player really does see the number on his back as just that.
Which is why Ben Atiga is suitably vague when quizzed whether he will be wearing 15 or 13 for the Blues in this year's Super 12.
The 21-year-old was reluctantly thrust into the national spotlight last October when it emerged the All Black selectors had requested he swap berths with Mils Muliaina for Auckland's NPC game against Otago.
It was never explained if it was in order to view Muliaina at centre, or Atiga at fullback. But the All Black coaches probably had their interest piqued equally.
Muliaina, the first choice All Black fullback since 2003, has been touted as an option at centre. His powerful thrusts, strong defence and clever reading of where the space lies are qualities that would greatly enhance the potency of the All Black midfield.
While Atiga, who won his solitary test cap as the last line of defence at the 2003 World Cup, seems more suited to fullback.
He kicks well off both feet, is surprisingly effective in defence and is one of New Zealand's best exponents at changing his angle when attacking the ball.
If he is thrown the No 15 jersey by Blues coach Peter Sloane, he'll be quite happy. "When I was switched to fullback last year, we were just experimenting," says Atiga. "They knew that I preferred fullback so they gave me a go. They wanted to have a look at the different options they could see in the All Black backline so they swapped Mils and I around."
But much to the chagrin of the old school, who like things to be placed neatly in boxes, Atiga would be just as happy to play at centre this season.
Atiga says the position is growing on him. He's also aware of the pending vacuum Tana Umaga will create when he calls it quits some time in the not too distant future.
To ensure he is picked for the Blues in either position, Atiga is using the pre-season period to improve his speed and stamina.
Or at least he would be were it not for a hamstring injury which is currently keeping him confined to every player's least favourite position - face down on the physio's couch.
