Smit out for six weeks

South African rugby captain Jon Smit yesterday received a six-week ban for striking French counterpart Jerome Thion and fracturing his larynx in the Springboks' 26-20 loss on Sunday.

The suspension will commence on January 14, 2006, the opening day of the new season in South Africa.

He will be able to resume playing on February 26.
