PARIS - Coaches Bernard Laporte and Matt Williams were two angry men in the Stade de France news conference room on Saturday after the French scraped a lucky 16-9 win over Scotland in their Six Nations opener.
"I'm angry because the performance of our players was something people in Scotland can be proud of," said Williams, whose side were leading 9-6 when they were controversially denied a try.
The touch judge ruled that number eight Allister Hogg had put his foot in touch while running for the line in the 68th minute. Television replays cast doubts over the decision.
"I'm angry because the guys deserved to win and didn't deserve to be robbed like that," Williams said.
Williams directed his anger at Irish touch judge Simon McDowell. "It's the third time he takes wrong decisions against us. Enough is enough," he said.
The Scotland coach was full of praise for his players.
"We couldn't have asked for more from them. I can only regret their loss of concentration and discipline in the last two minutes.
"Against a team like France, we paid the price but if the guys carry on playing like that, Scottish rugby will survive."
Laporte was in an altogether different mood and he had some very harsh words for his title holders.
"During the first half, I had the feeling that they were afraid to handle the ball as if it would burn their hands.
"We didn't try anything, we were in a very uncomfortable position, we lacked possession and when we won the ball we dropped it," he said.
"The second half was a bit better but it was a very laborious win and I thought we would not make it until the end. The only positive thing is that, at the end, we won and a win will always be better that a defeat."
Laporte and team manager Jo Maso hinted they were already considering changes to the 22-player squad for France's next game, against England at Twickenham in eight days' time.
"I have a stiff neck and I'm going to miss the official dinner tonight. I'll be able to watch England's game against Wales and analyse our own game," said Laporte.
"We are going to have a busy day tomorrow (Sunday) before we announce our squad," added Maso.
