Samoa began their build-up to this year's rugby World Cup with an unconvincing win over the New Zealand Divisional 15 in Pukekohe today.
The Samoans scored a converted try in the last minute to escape with a 30-27 victory against a team selected from New Zealand's second and third division provinces.
The composite team looked destined to cause a boilover when they led 18-5 at halftime following tries to Hayden Triggs and skipper Mutu Ngarium.
Samoa performed considerably better after the break as their backs and forwards began to discover some fluidity but the Divisional side, boosted by a 17-point haul from goalkicking fullback Tim Manawatu, still led 27-23 entering the final minute.
The tourists continued to apply pressure and were rewarded when fullback Tanner Vili crossed the tryline for Earl Va'a to convert and save their blushes.
Samoa now head to Australia for matches against Queensland and New South Wales on June 12 and June 15 respectively before a home test against Ireland on June 20 and a four-match tour of South Africa.
