A dozen websites have been warned for using Rugby World Cup logos and trademarks without permission.
The warnings are part of tight controls on official emblems, branding and even the words "Rugby World Cup".
Several new websites have been launched to cash in on Cup fever by offering accommodation listings, local information and networking.
They were being closely monitored by IMG, the company that manages commercial rights around the Cup.
IMG legal affairs manager Cate Slater said most breaches were genuine mistakes and were rectified immediately.
Under strict rules established by the Major Events Management Act, unauthorised use of the name of a major tournament for commercial gain is prohibited.
Even websites that include the phrase "Rugby World Cup" in the domain name are likely to attract attention from lawyers. Slater said monitoring the web was likely to become "a fulltime job" closer to the tournament.
Online marketer Simon Earle hadn't heard from lawyers about his site, rugbycupnz.com. He plans to offer accommodation listings.
