French communities in New Zealand spent the day partying wildly after their rugby side eliminated the All Blacks from the World Cup yesterday.
At French cafes and restaurants, eager groups of fans had gathered hoping the impossible dream could come true. Other fans mingled freely with All Black supporters in bars.
There were wild scenes at Fox's Ale House at the Viaduct, while those who had packed Bouchon Crepery and Wine Cafe in Kingsland were dancing on the tables.
"It was a great game ... the result is amazing," said Alex Roux, Bouchon manager. "France played well. To beat the All Blacks, they played the best game they could." He also had a message for All Black fans. "They were fantastic. I think this time the cup is for us and you will win the cup in four years."
At the La Tropezienne Bakery and Cafe in Browns Bay, Louis Bouquet said the atmosphere was electric. He was touched that an older patron had given him a jar of Kiwi tears. "It was a beautiful, sporting thing to do. I feel more confident now about beating England. But I fear South Africa most of all."
Managing director of Pyrennes Deli in Devonport Yannick Miseriux crammed 30 New Zealanders, French and South Africans into his garage for the match. "I was quite sceptical of our chances, hoping that it wouldn't be 60-nil or something. But we went completely mental at the final whistle."
He planned to give the staff today off work for a fishing trip. He said his celebrations had not scared off customers. "We are extremely busy because we have Kiwis coming in for comfort food."
