The injury crisis in Australia's camp may force veteran back-rower Radike Samo to play on the wing in their final pool game against Russia this weekend.
The Wallabies' injury concerns have eased somewhat, but Samo, who filled in out wide when injuries decimated Australia's backline against the USA, may still be required to start on the wing against one of the group minnows in Nelson.
Just like last week against the US, Deans only has 24 fit players to pick from, although centre Anthony Faingaa could yet be available as well if he meets the IRB's strict concussion guidelines.
Just to be safe, given the squad's diminishing backline stocks, the Wallabies will wait until after the Russia game before deciding on a replacement for Wycliff Palu, who has returned home with a hamstring injury.
Flankers Matt Hodgson and Beau Robinson and midfielders Ben Tapuai and 92-Test discard Matt Giteau remain the most likely options.
