NICE - Customs officers in southeast France have seized counterfeit All Blacks rugby team merchandise worth 36,400 euros (51,200 dollars), the budget ministry said Friday.
The 1,025 T-shirts, scarves and polo shirts discovered during a routine check in Menton, on the border with Italy, last Thursday were leftovers from fake merchandising stock sold at the Italy-New Zealand rugby world cup match in Marseille.
Two sellers from Naples were briefly detained and are expected to incur heavy customs fines, a ministry official said.
In 2006, French customs officials had seized tens of thousands of fake items during the football World Cup in Germany.
