Weather forecaster Ken Ring has offered his expertise to the All Blacks.
Auckland-based Mr Ring, who produces 365-day weather forecasts based on the movements of the moon, said he was approached by a former client who identified himself as being on the All Blacks management team seeking weather information on the days New Zealand would be playing.
The idea was that it would play a factor in player selection. "There would be certain players who would operate better at certain speeds depending on the firmness of the ground and how wet it's been before," said Mr Ring.
"There'd be certain players who would play better if it was less windy ... and if it was raining. Just how close it was to New Zealand conditions, one would say."
Mr Ring would only identify his contact as a Maori businessman based in Rotorua. He understands the man is with the All Blacks in France at the moment.
"He probably saw it as adding something indigenous to the planning of the event."
The Guardian reported that coach Graham Henry has hired Mr Ring, and is using his forecasts to assist in team selection.
This could not be confirmed by the Rugby Union last night.
Mr Ring did not know where the directive came from, but as the man who hired him was a former client, there was no reason to doubt him.
Mr Ring produces a yearly weather almanac setting out the daily weather for the next 365 days. He says he has provided forecasts for specific events including for the Melbourne Cup, Ellerslie Flower Show and the Auckland Santa Parade.
And Mr Ring's prediction for the 2007 World Cup-winning team?
"The All Blacks, of course."
