Japan's new national stadium in Tokyo will not be ready for the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
The 80,000 seat arena was a key part in the country's successful bid for the tournament and the Olympics the following year.
The opening and closing RWC games were tagged to bookend Japan's successful bid for the 9th global tournament.
However costs blowouts for the stadium build are tipped to go beyond $2 billion and those construction problems have forced a rethink with Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announcing plans for the stadium had been scrapped.
"I have decided we must go back to the drawing board," he said.
