SOUTHLAND v TARANAKI
INVERCARGILL - Taranaki are looking to blot out the memory of their 14-42 loss to Auckland last weekend when they take on Southland in their NPC first division rugby match at Homestead Stadium today.
Taranaki were outclassed at Eden Park by some fine loose forward work and the magic of outstanding utility back Orene Ai'i.
Taranaki assistant coach Kieran Crowley said the result had rocked his side, who had shown good pre-season form.
"Disappointed was the way they felt, but you have got to give credit to Auckland, they are a good side," the former All Blacks fullback said.
Today's match would be the ideal chance to address some of the issues raised by the Aucklanders, Crowley said.
"When we were under pressure we didn't react well, that's what we'll be working on."
Taranaki arrived in Invercargill yesterday without experienced captain Andy Slater, whose wife is expecting a child. Slater is due to join the team this morning.
Despite a resounding 49-12 win to Taranaki when the two teams met at New Plymouth two weeks ago, Crowley was not writing Southland off.
"That result meant nothing, Southland were at the end of a hard tour and we were fairly fresh.
"We know they are going to be tough."
A key to Taranaki's chances in this year's NPC will be the return of fullback Daryl Lilley.
Unwanted by Canterbury, Lilley was welcomed back by the province who helped launch his career.
"He's been playing outstanding rugby for us," Crowley said.
"He's just got so much experience, with Canterbury and in the Super 12."
Lilley's goalkicking could also be crucial with wintry conditions predicted for today's game.
