A brawl which erupted at a weekend rugby match in Southland is being investigated by both police and Rugby Southland.
Police described the brawl which broke out among spectators at the Wyndham versus Mataura senior club rugby game at Wyndham on Saturday as "a pretty disgusting episode".
It started with a fight over discarded rubbish and ended with the police being called and two spectators being injured.
The incident was appalling, Rugby Southland chief executive Roger Clark told the Southland Times.
The union was waiting for police to complete their inquiries before deciding what further action needed to be taken.
If any of the spectators involved in the fight were members of either club, Rugby Southland had the ability to sanction the clubs through its own judicial process.
"We are just working in conjunction with the police and seeing where we fit it in," Mr Clark said.
