KEY POINTS:
Former Springbok captain Bob Skinstad has decided to bow out at the top and call an end to his playing career, AFP reported.
Skinstad was a member of South Africa's World Cup winning squad but was not part of the side that beat England in Paris last month.
The Zimbabwe-born flanker played 42 tests for the Sprinboks, 12 of them as captain.
"There were opportunities to continue in 2008, both in Europe and in South Africa, but I know that the time is right to say goodbye as a player," he told The Star newspaper.
