There is confidence in Wellington that the sevens are staying put.
Despite indications earlier this year that both Auckland and Dunedin would pitch for the event, it looks like the capital is the only main centre to have put forward a bid to host them from 2012 to 2016.
Wellington City Councilor, John Morrison, is confident the city will hold onto the event.
"We certainly made it very clear to the Rugby Union that we want to continue in partnership with them for another five year span" he told Newstalk ZB, "so we stepped up to the plate with what I think's a very good bid."
Mr Morrison says the event is about more than just sport and has become a fixture on the Wellington events calendar.
