A new-look New Zealand have kicked off their latest International Rugby Board world sevens series campaign with a rusty 31-7 defeat of the United States in Dubai.
In their first game since the Commonwealth Games final triumph over Australia in New Delhi last month, New Zealand struggled in the early stages, trailing 7-5 late in the first spell before outclassing the game US side by five tries to one.
Coach Gordon Tietjens named a squad featuring six debutants and managed to give field time to four of them with great reward.
All three second-half tries were scored by newcomers -- to 19-year-old Declan O'Donnell of Waikato, classy winger Frank Halai and elusive Aucklander Bryce Heem.
Both their first half tries went to Bay of Plenty livewire Toby Arnold while the US crossed through Mile Pule.
New Zealand were to play further pool matches tomorrow morning (NZT) against Zimbabwe and Argentina.
