New Zealand face Wales in the quarter-final of the South Africa sevens tournament after losing to traditional rivals Fiji 24-12 in their pool match overnight.
New Zealand responded to an early try by Fiji with two five-pointers from Belgium Tuatagaloa and Luke Masirewa to take a 12-7 halftime lead.
However, the Fijians hit back with three second-half tries to shut Gordon Tietjens' men out.
The two teams finished the pool stage equal on seven points after Fiji suffered a shock 21-19 loss to Scotland.
New Zealand beat Scotland 24-7 and England 14-7 in their other pool matches.
