New Zealand has tumbled out of the latest event on the IRB world rugby sevens championship, suffering a 43-14 thumping at the hands of Fiji in the Cup quarterfinals at the George Sevens in South Africa.
As if that was not enough, they were then been beaten 17-5 by Samoa in the Plate final, as they continue a troubled start to the world series.
Fiji went on to win the final 21-19 over Argentina.
Gordon Tietjens' team met the Fijians so early in the finals, because the NZers lost their pool match to Argentina 14-0, while the Fijians went through pool play unbeaten.
Under normal circumstances, the tournament seeding would keep favourites like New Zealand and Fiji away from each other until the semi-final or final stage.
