The Portia Woodman shows rolls on. Now with 33 tries this season on the women's World Series sevens circuit, the New Zealand speedster chalked five in the Cup final as they demolished the United States 50-12 to win the Atlanta Sevens yesterday.
New Zealand's tactics appear to be get her the ball swiftly, and long passes from partners-in-crime Kayla McAlister, Hazel Tubic and skipper Sarah Goss gave Woodman the ounce of room she needed.
"She's world-class, one of a kind. She's got so much talent and I'm just happy she's on my team," said Goss.
In fairness, Woodman was not just a one-woman band. New Zealand worked in threes, were swift to clear ball and backed up well. McAlister scored nine tries in the tournament and created a deadly one-two punch for New Zealand, while Honey Hireme, on the other wing, scored a double through her pace and a strong fend.
New Zealand have now won five consecutive Cup finals, and three in this series, but had to work hard to subdue Russia, 17-12, in their pool, and Canada, 24-22 in the semi, thanks to yet another Woodman special.
