The difficulty faced by Argentina in their first foray into the four-nations Rugby Championship can be seen with the selection of the Pumas' first international squad of the year.
The Pumas play Italy in homes tests in San Juan on June 9 and tests against France in Cordoba on June 16 and in Tucuman a week later - but the initial 29-man squad announced by coach Santiago Phelan contains only four of the Pumas team at last year's World Cup.
That is because none of the many Pumas playing in clubs taking part in the Top 14 play-offs in France (Castres, Montpellier, Toulon, Racing-Métro, Toulouse, Clermont) have been included.
Phelan will name a second squad soon with 24 European-based players ahead of the Pumas' historic opener to their international competition, against the Springboks in Cape Town on August 18.
The tests against France and Italy would have been perfect for the Pumas to work their way into the Rugby Championship - the expanded version of the old Tri Nations competition. However, the inability to select the European players before the match against the Boks will not help the Pumas.
