Rising stars Whaimotu Chemis, Charlie Ngatai and Michael Broadhurst scored all the tries in Poverty Bay's 43-10 victory over Thames Valley in their pool B Heartland rugby match in Gisborne today.
Winger Chemis scored a hat-trick, including a scintillating 78 metre run for his last try, while Ngatai and Broadhurst scored a brace apiece.
Poverty Bay dominated the first 40 minutes, scoring five tries and leading 31-7 at the break, with Thames Valley's poiints coming from an intercept try to David Harrison.
The visitors hit back strongly in the third quarter but despite a vigorous assault could only pick up three points from a penalty to Danny Watson.
Poverty Bay defended well and showed plenty of composure, hitting back in the last quarter to add two more tries.
For the home team, Chemis and Broadhurst had outstanding games, while Thames Valley halfback Simon Adams, first five-eighth Watson and flanker Filo Tu'uga had strong games.
