The New Zealand under-20 rugby team overcame a spirited Tonga for a comprehensive first up 48-9 win as it seeks back to back titles at the IRB junior world championship in Wales today.
After a tight first half in which the teams were only separated by a point, 10-9, New Zealand surged ahead for a convincing win in the opening Pool A encounter.
Tonga's points came from three first half penalties from full back Sione Toke while New Zealand responded with tries to Joe Hill (2), Peter Saili, Jackson Willison, Zac Guildford, Pae Fa'anunu and Andre Taylor while Daniel Kirkpatrick kicked two conversions and a penalty and Trent Renata three conversions.
