KEY POINTS:
All Blacks and Waikato halfback Brendon Leonard heads a group of nine players to today confirm their commitment to New Zealand rugby until the end of 2009.
Also included in the group is 2006 All Blacks and Canterbury centre Casey Laulala, who played for the Junior All Blacks in this years Pacific Nations Cup.
The others named today by the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) are Aaron Bancroft, of Otago, Tim Bateman, of Canterbury, Glen Horton, of Otago, Tasesa Lavea, of Auckland, Michael Paterson, of Canterbury, David Smith, of Auckland, and Otagos Alando Soakai.
NZRU deputy chief Executive Steve Tew welcomed the latest signings.
"These players have decided that they see their immediate playing future in New Zealand which is very encouraging ...
"They are all quality players at various stages of their careers and all with plenty to offer the teams that they play for.
"At a time when it is becoming increasingly challenging to retain players it is particularly satisfying to have secured the commitment of this group of talented players.
"It is exciting for their continued development and the contribution they will make to their province and franchise."
The re-signing of these nine players follows the announcements that Jimmy Cowan (to 2010), Sitiveni Sivivatu (2009) and Neemia Tialata (2011) have re-signed with the NZRU.
Other recent signings also include Cory Jane (2009), Aled de Malmanche (2009), Alby Mathewson (2009), Liam Messam (2011), Tii Paulo (2009), Kieran Read (2009), Niva Taauso (2008), Bernie Upton (2009), Tony Woodcock (2009) and Rudi Wulf (2009).
